How Does BOTOX Work?

BOTOX and other neuromodulators target wrinkles caused by squinting, frowning, smiling, and other facial expressions made by repeated movements of facial muscles. These include crow’s feet, vertical worry lines between the eyes, and horizontal forehead wrinkles. BOTOX softens these lines by temporarily immobilizing the muscles that create these “dynamic” wrinkles.

BOTOX vs. XEOMIN, Jeuveau, and DAXXIFY

If you’re looking to minimize expression lines, each neuromodulator achieves comparable results. The products differ in how long it takes to see results, how long the results last, and which areas and concerns they are best suited for. Because it arrived first, BOTOX is what most of our clients request during their initial injections. It usually takes about 4 to 7 days for the first noticeable results to appear after BOTOX injections, with the results improving for another week.

BOTOX, XEOMIN, and Jeuveau results last about 3 to 4 months before you’ll need a touch-up treatment. DAXXIFY—the most recent neuromodulator cleared by the FDA to reduce wrinkles—can last several months longer. We currently offer DAXXIFY at our Tampa Bay location.

How Much Do BOTOX Treatments Cost?

The cost of BOTOX and other neuromodulators varies, depending on the treatment area and your goals. During the consultation, one of our providers will discuss your options and create a custom treatment plan with a price quote.

BOTOX vs. Dermal Fillers

You may be surprised to learn that BOTOX and fillers target different concerns. Fillers such as JUVÉDERM® and RADIESSE® treat volume loss and the lines and wrinkles that come with it. Nasolabial folds, tear troughs, and deflated cheeks are common filler treatment areas. Many of our clients combine fillers and BOTOX, a technique often called a “liquid facelift.”

What Is a BOTOX Lip Flip?

Most people think of lip fillers when they’re considering lip augmentation. Fillers may be an appropriate choice for you, but a lip flip using BOTOX injections creates the appearance of a fuller upper lip without increasing its volume with fillers. BOTOX is injected into a small muscle just above the upper lip, resulting in the lip rolling upward. This “flip” exposes more of the red part of the lip called the vermillion, adding height and prominence. It takes about 10 to 14 days to see the full results and requires maintenance treatments every 3 to 4 months.

What Else Does BOTOX Treat?

The cosmetic uses of BOTOX extend beyond minimizing wrinkles. Other concerns we treat with BOTOX injections include:

Gummy smile: If you’re self-conscious about the visibility of your upper gums when smiling, BOTOX injections can help. BOTOX relaxes the muscle that pulls up the lip when you smile, so less of your gums are revealed.

Brow lift: Sagging brows can make you look tired or angry. BOTOX is a nonsurgical option that elevates the brows by relaxing the depressor muscles in the forehead.

Jawline slimming: If you want a less square face shape, BOTOX injections into the masseter (jaw) muscles can shrink them over time, resulting in a slimmer lower face.

How To Prepare for BOTOX Treatments

BOTOX appointments don’t require much preparation, and downtime is minimal. Here are a few things to avoid in the days leading up to your injections:

• Blood thinners, including ibuprofen (Motrin® or Advil®) and aspirin. This minimizes the risk of excess bruising.
• Alcohol, which is also a blood thinner, poses the same concerns as blood-thinning medications.
• Spending the day in the Florida sun. A sunburn makes it difficult to treat the skin.
• Supplements that can increase the risk of bleeding and bruising, such as vitamin E, fish oil, flaxseed, green tea, and garlic pills.

You should take a break from strenuous exercise for at least a day after your BOTOX injections because increased blood flow can cause more bruising and bleeding.
