Massage Therapy

Experience the healing power of touch with massage therapy in St. Petersburg, Pinellas Park, North Palm Beach, or Clearwater, FL, at The Garden Medical Spa, Wellness & Massage. Our licensed massage therapists have experience performing a range of therapeutic massages that relieve stress, soothe sore muscles, and alleviate pain.

What Is Massage Therapy?

People often associate massage with having someone rub their shoulders. Massage therapy, however, involves using different pressures, movements, and techniques to manipulate muscles and other soft tissues in the body. By slowing down your nervous system, massage therapy releases stress and tension, relieves body aches, heals injuries, and supports overall wellness.

Your Massage Therapy Options

We offer a diverse menu of massages, each personalized to your unique needs and preferences. You can add deep tissue, cupping, hot stones, or bamboo fusion to any massage. Clients often pair massage with a Hydrafacial®, spa facial, IV therapy, or another rejuvenating spa service.

What Is a Relaxation Massage?

This massage is a popular option for clients who want to relieve stress and tension throughout the body without the deeper pressure that can cause post-massage soreness. You may even prefer the lighter touch of a lymphatic drainage massage to relieve inflammation and remove excess fluid from the body.

What Is a Therapeutic/Deep Tissue Massage?

Our massage therapists customize this full-body massage to address your pain points with deeper pressure and focus on specific areas. They use neuromuscular and trigger point techniques to increase flexibility and promote circulation to the targeted areas, relieving chronic pain and injuries. Expect to feel a bit sore after the massage.

What Is a Hot Stone Massage?

This earthy, grounded treatment reduces stress and anxiety using gentle Swedish massage techniques and hot basalt stones. Indulge in this warm, relaxing massage.

What Is a Couples Massage?

This shared experience in the couple’s suite can enhance your physical, emotional, and mental health and help you feel more in tune with each other. You may each have the massage type of your choice within the same time frame. (There is no additional charge for the couple’s suite.)

What Is a Lymphatic Massage?

Lymphatic drainage massage uses gentle techniques to relieve swelling and blockages in your lymphatic system. It is recommended for people who have lymphedema, bloating, or certain medical procedures or illnesses.

What Is an Ashiatsu (Barefoot) Massage?

Ashiatsu massage is a barefoot, deep-tissue technique that exerts pressure on the muscles to help elongate them. We perform this massage in a special treatment room with overhead stability bars. Because the therapist’s foot is broader than the hand, they use their weight and pressure to target muscles, providing wider strokes.

How To Prepare for a Massage

Here are some pre-massage do’s and don’ts to help you get the most out of your massage therapy session:

Do:

  • Drink water: Massages are more effective when muscles and tissues are hydrated.
  • Eat light: Have a small, nutritious meal at least an hour before your session to minimize stomach growling.
  • Shower or freshen up: Good hygiene helps you feel comfortable and relaxed.
  • Dress simply: Wear clothing that is easy to change before and after your session.
  • Arrive a few minutes early: Reduce stress by giving yourself time to check in and relax.
  • Communicate: Review any injuries, areas of tension, or pressure preferences.

Don’t:

  • Drink alcohol or caffeine: Avoid drinks that dehydrate your body and make it harder to relax.
  • Do an intense workout: Exercising right before a massage can make your muscles extra sensitive.
  • Shave that day: Avoid skin irritation by shaving at least a day ahead of time.
  • Ignore health concerns: Talk to your doctor if you’re pregnant, have a medical condition, or are recovering from an injury.

What To Do and Not Do After Your Massage

Do:

  • Drink water: Support your body’s natural detox process.
  • Relax: Give your body a chance to benefit from the treatment.
  • Stretch: Gentle stretching can help maintain flexibility, improve circulation, and prevent soreness.
  • Apply heat or cold: Soak in a warm bath or apply ice packs to ease any lingering tightness.
  • Make it a routine: Regular massages provide long-term benefits like reduced stress and improved muscle recovery.

Don’t:

  • Work out: Give your muscles time to recover by holding off on strenuous exercise until the next day.
  • Eat a hearty meal: Wait at least 30 minutes or eat something light and nourishing.
  • Ignore soreness: Minor muscle sensitivity is normal, but be sure to discuss any prolonged discomfort with your therapist.
  • Skip self-care: Continue healthy habits, such as hydration, stretching, and relaxation techniques to help maintain results.

Why Am I Sore After a Massage?

Mild soreness after a massage is normal and usually fades within 24 to 48 hours. Causes include:

  • Muscle manipulation can cause tenderness, like after a workout.
  • Deep pressure may cause tiny tears in muscle fibers, triggering an inflammatory response.
  • Adjusting muscles that have been tight for months is a process as they adapt to a relaxed state.

Be sure to let your therapist know if you feel pain or strong discomfort during your massage.

Can I have a back massage in early pregnancy?

Yes! Our prenatal massage is a safe and gentle way to ease back and hip pain, relieve stress, and reduce swelling. Always consult your OB-GYN before starting massage therapy, especially if you have a high-risk pregnancy or other complications.

What is the difference between Swedish and deep tissue massage?

While both are popular types of massage, they have some notable differences.

  • Swedish: Gentle and soothing technique increases overall relaxation and stress relief. It can be a good choice when you want to pamper yourself.
  • Deep tissue: Firm technique that provides “good” pain and may leave you sore afterward. It can be helpful for addressing specific muscle problems, chronic tension, or injuries.
What toxins are released after massage?

Massage does not directly flush toxins out of the body; however, it can help the body’s natural detoxification systems, such as the liver and kidneys, work more efficiently.

How often should you get a massage?

While having a monthly massage is a good starting point, there are reasons to have them more frequently depending on your health, schedule, and budget. Massage therapy benefits physical and emotional health by relieving pain and stress, supporting the immune and circulatory systems, improving sleep, and more.

I have been getting massages from Evelyn for 25 years. She is THAT good! Whatever tension or aches I hold in my body when I walk in, I leave the massage room floating.
